We Could Do a Little Fear Mongering, Only Reality Based

I don't think we should emulate Republican fear mongering. Although successful, at least in the short term, it is reprehensible, as it places us on the road to facism.

I do think, however, Americans could use a dose of reality, and the message is fairly simple. If you accept Bush's argument - that "winning" in Iraq is critical to winning the so-called war on terror, you'd better be ready to sacrifice the life of your son or daughter.

The logic is straightforward. By most accounts, the current troop strength is not sufficient to prevail in Iraq.  That means in order to win this "critical battle" in the war on terror, we ultimately have to increase our troop strength. We also may very well have to increase our troop strength in Afghanistan. But our all volunteer armed forces are depleted. There's only one place to find the needed troops - reinstitution of the draft. And that means EVERYBODY's sons and daughters are up for grabs.

I don't know how this message can be delivered effectively. I sure hope someone reading this does. I just have to believe there are millions of folks out there who support Bush for stupid reasons (he lowered their taxes, he's against gay marriage) who, when faced with the possibility of losing a kid to the draft, or being drafted themselves, will have a real sudden change of heart.

It was already tried (none / 0)

Charles Rangel did this back in 04 and his bill was killed on the spot.  Besides I think telling the American people that Bush a dictator bent on taking away our civil rights is fear mongering enough.

If it still isn't enough you could always bring Al Gore into it and have us all believing the entire world is going to end in the near future.

Why would you want to use American troops as pawns in a political battle?
